The main focus for students in our school is to teach them the importance of being healthy and and active. Of course we play basketball, badminton, floor hockey, etc, etc, etc...but it is not all about developing each specific skill within a specific sport. While these skills are important and we do practice and refine them, it is also about providing students with a wide range of experiences. The types of experiences students engage in daily include traditional sports, various tag and sprint games, gymnastics/movement, dance, fitness challenges, and games that develop teamwork while also focusing on gross and fine motor development and coordination. Sometimes it is difficult to categorize everything we do; but it is all directed towards active participation. It also helps children learn the structure necessary to be successful in a given activity (eg. lining up for relay races, turn taking, following rules for specific tasks, etc). Hopefully, through these experiences, each student will walk away at the end of the year with at least one activity/sport that they enjoy, and have a good understanding of how it connects to the importance of being active.Comments are closed.
