Throughout the month of September, the focus has been mainly directed toward cooperative and initiative games that speak to our ability to work effectively with our peers and more importantly getting to know who we are working with. Ask your son/daughter the types of problems and activities they have been engaged in, whether it be The Diminishing Load Problem, Hog Call, All Aboard, or many other games, and how it relates to communication and teamwork. Don’t worry if your son/daughter does not remember the actual name for each activity, just ask them how hula hoops and skipping ropes and bean bags; the number of syllables and corresponding actions in our names; carrying others across a line in a specific order; or calling out farm animal sounds are connected to their ability to work with a group.
In addition, we are being active and getting our hearts pumping while learning to race walk with correct form. During each class, students are gradually developing their knowledge towards heart health. They are beginning to understand that by walking for longer periods of time, which thus increases their ability to race-walk longer distances, their cardiovascular endurance also increases - which in turn, creates a “healthier, stronger me”. While the heart is getting its necessary work out, we are also further developing coordination and strength. Race walking is a great alternative to running! In addition, we have tied in the necessity to “train” for longer distance activities such as our upcoming Terry Fox Run. Terry needed to train for his Marathon of Hope, just as we need to condition our bodies to run, walk, or race walk for the hour long Terry Fox Run next Wednesday.
