Hello parents. We are beginning to use Twitter as a way to communicate what's going on in the class to our parents. I will be doing two to three tweets a week! This blog page will remain as it is with my Twitter feed on the page, which means that you can always come here to see my latest tweets. If you would like a more convenient notice of my Tweets, please click on one of the Tweets below and "follow me". You will need a Twitter account to do so. Otherwise, keep checking back here for the latest in Physical Education at Edgemont School.
The basis of any successful team or partnership is the ability for that group of people to be able to work well with each other, problem solve through brainstorming and effective communication, negotiate conflict, and understand and use each person’s talents/strengths. Ultimately, if the group is unable to get along then success is limited. This can also be related to sport. A team that functions well together will be more successful than one that argues. A player who thinks he/she is the star player and refuses to allow his/her team to help is destined to fail.
Over the course of October, students engaged in activities specifically focused on communication and cooperation within team and partnered tasks. They were randomly placed into groups in some instances; and at other times, they were able to choose their own groups. Games such as, Pass With Your Feet, Snakes, and Memory Game were activities that required teams to problem solve and talk to each other to be successful. Our month long exploration of this General Outcome from the Physical Education Program of Studies culminated with Teamwork Centres. Ask your child what specific strategies were used in their group that allowed them to be an effective team. Upcoming for November and December: Olympic exploration (November and December) and Mission Impossible (week of Nov 19-24th) The first month or so of school can sometimes be filled with excitement, anxiety, wonder and sometimes uncertainty. But, we muddled through all those emotions and have settled into routines and structures that make us feel like we have never left.
Our school wide inquiry this year is “Ways of Knowing”. When we think about how that might fit into our learning in Physical Education classes, there are so many avenues one can take to explore the ideas brought out by this statement. Do I know the expectations? How do I know that I am communicating well? How do I communicate effectively with my team? How do I know my team is working well together? Do I know what it means to be in control of my actions? Do I know how to move in the way that is required to perform a given task? If I don’t know, what do I need to do to find out the answers? Throughout the year, we will focus on some of these questions to help students better understand their personal role and responsibilities in their learning. This will assist them to further develop their overall knowledge of physical activity (Skill), how to work with various groups of people (Communication), and the importance of being a life long active person (Active Way of Life). If you click on the Assessment Tab on the top of the page, you will find the assessment rubric that is used with students to provide deeper understanding of their competency in PE. This will help guide them to recognize their personal strengths and also areas that may need some focus. We were truly fortunate once again this year as the warmth and brilliance of the sun shone on us as we took part in the annual Terry Fox Run. Our AMA School Safety Patrollers kept us on course while cheering us on throughout each lap around the field.
