Interesting quote/observation of the day: "Girls can do anything boys can do!"
- Reflection from two girls learning to how to pee in the woods on their day hike.
Exploring and discovering are important elements in learning during our Outdoor School experiences. Over the past couple of days, students had the opportunity to go on a hike throughout the property. Identifying trees and their healing properties, noticing bear claws on trees, skipping rocks, learning about Old Man's Beard and Witch's Hair (ask your child which one is poisonous), identifying various types of animal scat, and knowing which berries are edible were only some of the learning experiences groups touched on during their hikes. At the same time, students worked on their own personal challenges towards hiking. Each and every student learned that they could make it through a full day hike. And it was not about the distance, but about the overall experience. Having the opportunity to walk by the river, skip stones in the lake, tromp through a large field, play camouflage in the long grass, or race with a friend up a moderate incline showed students that hiking and engaging with nature can be exercise and fun at the same time. It's the thinking behind it and the creativity that captured us and hopefully, inspired us to give hiking another try in our personal lives!
Tomorrow we are headed home. Students have learned that it is ok to miss those closest to them (mom, dad, brother, sister, grandma, grandpa, family pet, etc, etc, etc) and still have a great time away from home. At nightly meetings, students have expressed their understanding of the gift Outdoor School has given to them. Their experiences are ingrained in their memories. They will be sad to leave.
Parents are reminded that we will be arriving at school at approximately 2:30pm tomorrow. Please be prompt when picking up your child. They will be exhausted and definitely ready to head home! Please don't wait for your child to phone as we have only a few lines available at the school. We anticipate the luggage bus will arrive around 2pm; so if you are available, we would appreciate it if you could arrive early to help unload the luggage off the bus. This will also make the going home process easier and faster for you and your child.
Once again, another beautiful day at Outdoor School! See you tomorrow!
